Tuatara preschool provides an environment that encourages collaborative relationships between children parents and teachers so we can fulfill our aim to become a community of learners, were ideas and relationships are valued and respected and where children’s investigations are encouraged and their ideas are celebrated.
Therefore our environment is very special to us and is used to encourage children to investigate and discover new ideas and concepts both in groups and individually. The use of the environment in aiding learning and discovery is an underlying principle of the educational approach of Reggio Emilia which has inspired the teachers/educators at Tuatara preschool.
[Reggio Emilia's] innovative curriculum recognised the rights and potentials of children to question, reflect, problem solve, theorise, experiment and express their findings…children should be provided with opportunities and time to freely experiment, explore and play, but should also be encouraged and assisted during this time to master the many tools and skills of communication, enabling them to actively translate what they perceive, not only through the spoken word, but also through other potent languages. (Millikan, 2003).
